Fixes #37.

While partially reverting to old behaviour, this
still resolves an issue caused by
global variables being modifiable by anyone.

Period intervals; initial tender data

They were named just like the global variable,
though they are local in corresponding functions.

This reduces unnecessary duplication of code.
